Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it in 2026? Since Sony’s May 2026 price increase pushed the top tier to $19.99/month, this question comes up a lot more than it used to. I’ve been running Premium on my own PS5 Pro for a while now, so this is based on actual use, not just a spec sheet comparison.

Quick verdict: Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it? For most players, PS Plus Extra ($16.99/month) is the better value. Premium ($19.99/month) is only worth it if you’ll actually play PS1–PS3 classics or stream games instead of downloading them. Whichever tier you pick, pay yearly: it saves $52–80 a year.

This is part of my ongoing series reviewing subscriptions and software to help you figure out what’s worth paying for.

Note: subscription pricing changes frequently. Sony raised PS Plus monthly and 3-month pricing across all tiers in May 2026. Double-check current pricing directly on playstation.com before subscribing.

PlayStation Plus Tiers and Pricing in 2026

PS Plus has three nested tiers. Each higher tier keeps everything from the one below it and adds more on top.

Tier1 month3 months12 monthsPaying monthly for a year
Essential$10.99$27.99$79.99$131.88
Extra$16.99$43.99$134.99$203.88
Premium$19.99$54.99$159.99$239.88
PS Plus Essential, Extra and Premium plan screen on PS5 Pro
  • Essential: online multiplayer, monthly free games, 100GB cloud saves, store discounts
  • Extra: everything in Essential, plus a rotating catalog of 400+ PS4/PS5 downloadable games
  • Premium: everything in Extra, plus a classics catalog (PS1 through PS3 titles), cloud streaming with rewind, and game trials

The 12-month prices weren’t affected by the May 2026 increase. Only monthly and 3-month billing went up. That makes annual billing a much better deal than before: paying monthly for a full year of Essential costs $131.88, versus $79.99 if you commit annually upfront.

Already a Subscriber? Don’t Lose Your Old Price

The May 2026 increase applies to new subscribers. If you were already on PS Plus before May 20, 2026, you keep your old price as long as your subscription doesn’t lapse and you don’t change tiers.

That means two things move you to the new, higher price: upgrading or downgrading your tier, or letting your membership expire. If you’re on an older rate and happy with your tier, the cheapest move is to leave it alone and keep it active.

Is PlayStation Plus Premium Worth It? Here’s What You Actually Get

Premium’s real value on top of Extra comes down to two things: the classics catalog and cloud streaming. If neither genuinely interests you, Premium isn’t worth the jump over Extra. You’d be paying $3/month extra for features you won’t use.

Premium’s cloud streaming includes 4K streaming for supported PS5 titles, which is useful on lower-storage setups or when you want to try a game before committing to a big download.

Where Premium earns its keep is for players who actually want to revisit PS1–PS3 era games, or who prefer streaming over downloading.

Who Premium Is Worth It For

  • Nostalgia-driven players who want classic PS1/PS2/PS3 titles without hunting down old hardware or discs
  • Players with limited console storage who prefer streaming over downloading large game files
  • Anyone who likes to try before buying, since Premium includes timed trials of select titles

Who Should Stick With Extra Instead

Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it if you mainly play current-gen games? Probably not. Here’s who should stick with Extra:

  • Players who only care about the current-gen catalog. Extra’s 400+ PS4/PS5 games cover what most players actually want.
  • Anyone without reliable high-speed internet. Cloud streaming needs a stable connection, and Premium’s added value shrinks fast if streaming isn’t practical for you.
  • Budget-conscious players. The gap between Extra and Premium adds up to $25 a year on annual billing, or $36 a year paying monthly, if you’re not using the classics regularly.

PS Plus vs Xbox Game Pass

ServiceBest forMonthly price
PS Plus EssentialOnline multiplayer, monthly free games$10.99
PS Plus Extra400+ game downloadable catalog$16.99
PS Plus PremiumClassics catalog, cloud streaming$19.99
Xbox Game Pass UltimateDay-one access to new releases$22.99

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s biggest advantage is day-one access to major new releases: a game launches and it’s immediately in the catalog. PS Plus doesn’t offer this, and its catalog additions tend to be games that have been out for a while. If playing new releases at launch matters most to you, Game Pass wins. If a mix of online multiplayer, a large back catalog, and classic games matters more, PS Plus fits better.

Cheapest Way to Get PS Plus in 2026

  1. Pay yearly. Annual billing saves $51.89 on Essential, $68.89 on Extra and $79.89 on Premium compared to paying monthly for 12 months.
  2. Watch for sales. Sony often discounts PS Plus memberships during its seasonal sales, so if your renewal is coming up, it can be worth waiting.
  3. Look for discounted 12-month membership cards from major retailers, which sometimes sell below the PlayStation Store price.
  4. Don’t let it lapse if you’re on a pre-May 2026 price. A lapse moves you to the new rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it over Extra?
Only if you specifically want the classics catalog or cloud streaming. If you mainly play current-gen games, Extra covers that at a lower price.

How much is PS Plus Premium per year?
$159.99 per year in the US, or $239.88 if you pay monthly for 12 months.

Did PS Plus prices go up in 2026?
Yes. Sony raised monthly and 3-month pricing across all three tiers in May 2026. Annual pricing wasn’t affected.

Does the 2026 price increase affect existing subscribers?
No, as long as your subscription doesn’t lapse and you don’t change tiers. Either of those moves you to the new pricing.

Should I pay monthly or annually for PS Plus?
Annually, if you’re confident you’ll keep it for a full year. The gap between monthly and annual pricing widened after the May 2026 increase, making annual billing a clearly better deal.

Is PS Plus Premium better than Xbox Game Pass?
It depends on what you value. Game Pass offers day-one access to new releases; PS Plus Premium offers a classics catalog and cloud streaming of older titles. Neither is a strict upgrade over the other.

Final Verdict

Is PlayStation Plus Premium worth it in 2026? For most players, Extra is the better value. It covers the current-gen catalog most people want without paying extra for classics or cloud streaming you might not use. Premium earns its price for nostalgia-driven players, or for those short on storage who benefit from cloud streaming.

If you’re new to PS Plus, start with Extra and upgrade to Premium only if you find yourself wanting the classics catalog. If you’re an existing subscriber on an older price, think twice before changing tiers, since any change moves you to the new 2026 pricing.

My rating: Essential 4/5, Extra 4.3/5, Premium 3.9/5. Extra is the sweet spot for most players; Premium only for a specific use case.
