Is YouTube Premium Worth It in 2026?

Is YouTube Premium worth it in 2026? After YouTube’s April price increase, the Individual plan now costs $15.99/month, which makes it the most expensive of the big consumer subscriptions in its category. Whether that price makes sense depends almost entirely on how much you use YouTube and whether you’d otherwise pay for a separate music service.

This review is based on published pricing and plan details rather than personal use, so double-check the numbers on YouTube’s site before subscribing. It also pairs with my Spotify vs Apple Music comparison, since YouTube Premium includes a full music subscription and competes with both.

This is part of my ongoing series reviewing subscriptions and software to help you figure out what’s worth paying for.

Note: YouTube Premium pricing changed in 2026, and plan features (especially for the cheaper Lite tier) have shifted over time. Double-check current details on youtube.com/premium before subscribing.

YouTube Premium Pricing in 2026

Prices below are US figures after the April 2026 announcement, which reached existing subscribers starting with their June billing cycle:

  • Individual: $15.99/month, up from $13.99, or $159.99/year on the prepaid annual plan
  • Family: $26.99/month, up from $22.99, for up to six people in the same household
  • Student: $8.99/month, up from $7.99
  • Premium Lite: $8.99/month, up from $7.99
  • YouTube Music Premium (standalone): $11.99/month

The annual plan works out to about $13.33/month, saving roughly $32 a year compared with paying monthly. It’s only offered on the Individual plan.

One more tip: several sources note that subscribing through the iPhone app can cost more than subscribing on YouTube’s website because of app-store billing. If you’re already subscribed through the app, check whether signing up on the web would lower your price.

What You Actually Get

The full Individual, Family, and Student plans include:

  • Ad-free video across YouTube
  • Background play, so audio keeps going with your screen off or another app open
  • Offline downloads for videos
  • YouTube Music Premium, ad-free and with background and offline listening

That last item is the key to the whole value question. Music Premium costs $11.99/month on its own, so the full plan effectively adds ad-free video, background play, and downloads for about $4 more.

Is YouTube Premium Worth It? The Bundle Math

Think of it as two purchases in one. If you already pay for Spotify or Apple Music, YouTube Premium’s music service overlaps with something you have, so you’re really paying $15.99 for ad-free video and background play. If you’d switch your music over to YouTube Music, the bundle replaces a separate music subscription and the extra cost is small.

The value case is strongest when you watch YouTube most days and would also use YouTube Music as your main music app. It’s weakest when you only watch occasionally or already have a music service you’re happy with.

What About Premium Lite?

Is YouTube Premium worth it if you only care about fewer ads? Possibly not, and that’s where Lite comes in. Premium Lite at $8.99/month is the cheaper option for people who mainly want fewer ads. It removes ads from most videos but does not include YouTube Music Premium. Sources disagree on which extras Lite includes, since YouTube has adjusted its features over time, so check the plan page for the current details, especially for background play and downloads.

If ad-free viewing is your main goal and you don’t need music, Lite is worth considering before committing to the full plan.

Who Should Get YouTube Premium

Is YouTube Premium worth it for your habits? It tends to pay off for:

  • Daily YouTube viewers who are bothered by ads and want background play
  • People who want one subscription for video and music rather than paying for two
  • Households of three or more, since the Family plan brings the per-person price down noticeably (two people break even against two Individual plans)

Who Should Skip It

  • Occasional viewers who only watch a few videos a week
  • Anyone happy with their current music service and unbothered by YouTube ads
  • Solo users who mainly want ad-free videos, who may be better served by Premium Lite

YouTube Premium vs Spotify and Apple Music

OptionMonthly PriceIncludes
YouTube Premium (Individual)$15.99Ad-free video, background play, downloads, YouTube Music
YouTube Music Premium (standalone)$11.99Ad-free music only
Spotify Premium (Individual)$12.99Music, podcasts, audiobook hours
Apple Music (Individual)~$12Music with lossless audio

If music is all you want, the standalone services cost less. YouTube Premium only makes sense when you’d actually use the video benefits too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is YouTube Premium worth it if I only listen to music? Not really. YouTube Music Premium alone costs $11.99/month, which is the better fit for a music-only user. The full plan only makes sense if you also want ad-free video.

How much does YouTube Premium cost in 2026? In the US, Individual is $15.99/month, Family is $26.99/month, and Student and Lite are $8.99/month each, after the April 2026 increase.

Is the annual plan cheaper? Yes, the Individual annual plan is $159.99, which works out to about $13.33/month and saves roughly $32 compared with monthly billing.

Is the Family plan a good deal? For households of two or more, usually yes. At two people it costs about the same per person as Individual, and it gets cheaper with each additional member, up to six in the same household.

Is Premium Lite enough? If your main goal is fewer ads on videos and you don’t need YouTube Music, it can be. Check its current feature list first, since it has changed over time.

Final Verdict

Is YouTube Premium worth it in 2026? For heavy daily YouTube viewers who’d also use YouTube Music as their main music app, yes, the bundle covers a lot for $15.99. For occasional viewers or people happy with their current music service, it’s harder to justify after the price increase.

If you’re unsure, start with the annual plan only if you’re confident you’ll keep it, and consider Premium Lite as a cheaper test of whether ad-free viewing matters to you. Either way, it belongs on your regular subscription audit list.

My rating: 3.9/5, strong for daily YouTube users who’d also use its music service, less compelling for light viewers
